Together with the scientists from 16 research institutions from China and Germany, Prof. Stefan Schäfer and M. Sc. Le Thi Kieu attended the Sino-German Conference on Hydroclimatological Extremes in Nanjing. At the conference, Prof. Stefan Schäfer and M. Sc. Le Thi Kieu delivered presentations on exploring the efficiency of Green Cities measures and assessing the impacts of urban green infrastructure on precipitation-runoff reduction and inner-urban temperature development.

In April 2024, the “Sino-German Conference on Hydroclimatological Extremes: Causes, Risks and Adaptation” was held at the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology. The event was a remarkable milestone in the 30-year cooperation in research of the Sino-German Cooperation Group (SGCG) on “Integrated drought risk management under multiple climatic and socioeconomic scenarios”.

The conference provided a forum for experts to discuss the complexities of hydroclimatological extremes in the context of climate change. Key discussions centered on assessing risks posed by these extremes and exploring effective adaptation and mitigation approaches.

At the conference, Prof. Stefan Schäfer delivered an insightful presentation on various Green Cities measures towards resilient and sustainable urban development. In alignment with this discussion, M. Sc. Le Thi Kieu presented a detailed analysis of the quantitative effects of urban green infrastructure in runoff reduction, underscoring its importance in mitigating climate effects in the urban context. Various field trips took place as part of the conference program.
